What Water Is Considered Hard?

Water is an essential part of our daily lives. Without it, we cannot cook meals, wash our hair, take a shower, or make a cup of tea. We use it constantly, yet rarely think about its quality. In reality, water quality can vary significantly depending on the region and even the season.

Have you ever noticed white limescale at the bottom of a kettle, buildup on faucets, or streaks on dishes after they dry? If so, you have probably wondered what causes it. The answer is simple: hard water. In this article, we will explain what hard water is, why it forms, how it affects the body and hair, and what can be done to reduce its impact.

What Is Hard Water?

Unless it is distilled, water contains dissolved minerals, organic substances, and other impurities. Water hardness is primarily caused by calcium and magnesium salts (often called hardness salts). The higher their concentration, the harder the water. Depending on the chemical composition, hardness is divided into two types:

  1. Temporary. This type is caused by calcium and magnesium bicarbonates. These compounds are relatively unstable and partially decompose when heated, which is why limescale forms in kettles. When water is boiled, bicarbonates partially break down and form sediment, reducing temporary hardness. Freezing may slightly alter mineral composition, but it is not considered a reliable method of softening water.
  2. Permanent. This type is caused by calcium and magnesium sulfates and chlorides. These salts are resistant to boiling, so permanent hardness can only be reduced using chemical treatment or filtration systems such as reverse osmosis.

Total hardness is the combination of temporary and permanent hardness. It is measured in various units, including degrees of hardness, but milligram-equivalents per liter (mg-eq/L) are also commonly used.

What Water Is Considered Hard?

There is no universal global standard for drinking water hardness. In many European countries, water of medium hardness typically ranges from about 2–4 mg-eq/L. The World Health Organization (WHO) does not establish a mandatory maximum hardness level for drinking water. Conventionally, drinking water is classified as:

  • very soft - 0–1.5 mg-eq/L;
  • soft - 1.5–4 mg-eq/L;
  • moderately hard - 4–8 mg-eq/L;
  • hard - 8–12 mg-eq/L;
  • very hard - above 12 mg-eq/L.

Water hardness can also vary throughout the year. During spring snowmelt and rainy autumn periods, tap water often becomes softer, while in winter and during dry seasons it may become harder.

Why Does Water Become Hard?

Water hardness is directly related to the geological layers it passes through. Surface water (rivers and lakes) is usually less hard because it has less contact with mineral rocks. Groundwater is often harder since it slowly filters through mineral-rich formations.

The hardness of water depends on:

  • Natural geological processes;
  • The mineral composition of rocks;
  • The rate at which minerals dissolve;
  • Seasonal factors.

Water hardness is not constant; its composition can change throughout the year. However, the deeper the water source, the more stable its mineral composition tends to be.

How to Determine Water Hardness

Hard water is almost indistinguishable from soft water by taste, color, or smell, although it may sometimes have a slightly bitter aftertaste. Indirect signs include poor soap lathering, rapid limescale buildup, white residue on clothes after washing, and stiffer fabrics.

To determine the exact level of hardness, a TDS meter or salinity tester can be used. It is important to note that such devices measure total dissolved solids rather than hardness alone.

There are many alarming claims online suggesting that calcium and magnesium salts accumulate in the body, causing kidney stones or vascular blockages. Seeing thick limescale in a kettle may indeed look concerning. However, scientific evidence suggests that the risks of moderate water hardness are often exaggerated.

The human body does not heat water to boiling point, so limescale cannot form inside organs. Minerals consumed through drinking water are generally processed and excreted by the kidneys.

To exceed recommended daily mineral intake from drinking water alone would require extremely high consumption. For example, the recommended daily calcium intake is about 1000 mg, and magnesium ranges from 200 to 400 mg. Two liters of hard water typically provide only a small fraction of the recommended daily calcium intake. Even in the unlikely event of excessive intake, surplus minerals are eliminated through normal kidney function.

Nevertheless, hard water may cause certain inconveniences, such as a bitter taste in beverages, limescale buildup, and skin dryness. Individuals with sensitive or allergy-prone skin may experience increased irritation. In some cases, especially for newborns with sensitive skin, caregivers may choose to soften bath water by boiling it or using appropriate filtration systems.

As discussed above, hard water is not considered a direct cause of hair loss. However, it can influence the appearance of hair and the condition of the scalp. Many people ask: can hard water cause hair loss? Current evidence suggests that while it does not directly trigger baldness, it may contribute to changes in hair texture and manageability. If a person has no underlying causes of increased shedding (such as hormonal imbalance, iron deficiency, or genetic predisposition), hard water alone is unlikely to cause baldness. However, when other risk factors are present, environmental influences - including water quality - may act as contributing factors. Applying protective oils such as coconut or argan oil before washing may also help reduce direct mineral contact with the hair shaft.

Specialized shampoos and conditioners designed to remove mineral buildup can improve hair texture. Exfoliating scalp treatments may also help maintain a healthier scalp environment. Additionally, limiting heat styling and mechanical stress supports overall hair resilience.

Softening water may reduce scalp dryness and irritation, help preserve hair color for longer, improve manageability, and enhance overall smoothness and shine. Proper care combined with water quality management can positively influence the appearance and health of hair.
